Do you sometimes have the experience where you hear the same thing, from different sources, all at about the same time? When that happens, I try to be very attentive, recognizing that God may be trying to draw my attention to something. I listen to Christian radio as I drive, so I get to hear messages from a variety of Christian speakers. Twice this past week, just as I started the car and the radio came on different speakers said almost the exact same thing. They were talking about God... + read more

One of the current catch phrases is “values driven”, as in “values driven leadership” or “a values driven organization”. As Christians, we certainly don’t want to get caught up in something because it is trendy. But, the reality is human beings are inherently values driven. I think God intentionally made us this way. Value simply means “the degree of importance of something”. So, to be values driven means to think and act on the basis of... + read more

We (Patty and me) have always been intoxicated by summers in New England.  Both of us grew up down south (Texas/Doug; Arizona/Patty) where you really couldn’t enjoy the summer.  Native New Englanders take a lot of things for granted up here: the ocean, the White Mountains, crystal clear rivers and lakes, etc, etc.  For over 35 years, we have enjoyed beautiful vacations on the Cape; on Newfound Lake in Bristol NH, at the Christmas Farm Inn in Jackson, New Hampshire; and,... + read more

Last month, we looked at an overview of our church’s personal discipleship model, the wheel illustration. Over the next few months, we will take a closer look at the components of this illustration to consider how we can apply the biblical truths represented to our own lives.      So, let’s start at the center and work our way outward.  Every one of us has something that is central in our lives. Psychologists tell us that every human being is born with... + read more

This month, Patty and I would like to address what’s been labeled as the "biggest issue in marriage".  That is, effective communication.  When we think of communication, we think of the KISS principle: “Keep It Simple Stupid” [or Sweetie].  In Ecclesiastes 7:29 GNT, we are told, “…God made us plain and simple, but we have made ourselves very complicated.” There are just a few principles that need to be mastered, in our opinion, to... + read more

Jesus answered, “Surely you have read in the Scriptures: When God made the world, ‘he made them male and female.’ And God said, ‘So a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two will become one body.’ So there are not two, but one. God has joined the two together, so no one should separate them.”        ~Matthew 19:4-6 Marriage is one of God’s wonderful gifts to humankind! As the... + read more

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”  Hebrews 12:2 The word in the original language for “fix our eyes” in this passage means, to intentionally look away from one thing so as to be able to focus on another.  We physical therapists evaluate people’s movement patterns, to help workers perform tasks... + read more

Libby Little Engaged the Unengaged It was my great blessing to attend a conference at Park Street Church. The main speaker was Libby Little. She and her husband raised their family in Afghanistan from just before the Soviet invasion to the 2010 martyrdom of her husband. They went to Afghanistan to share Christ's love with the unengaged. Dr. Thomas Little spent much of his time helping Afghans with serious vision issues. His clinic is still operational. It was truly astounding to hear how... + read more

Recently I (Doug) was meditating on Romans 15:13 in the Amplified.  It says,  “May the God of your hope so fill you with all joy and peace in believing – through the experience of your faith – that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound and be overflowing (bubbling over) with hope.”   I was ministered to with the fact that it is the power of God that allows us to “bubble over and abound” in hope.  Hope is the expectation that... + read more

Your close friend is passing through an overwhelming trial. What do you write on the card? You’re standing in line at the wake. What are you going to say? In times like these, we can count on “the comfort of the scriptures,” Romans 15:4. God’s Word has divine power to touch the deepest chords of the human heart in ways that our mere human sentiments cannot begin to match. There are literally hundreds of verses that bring strong comfort. Here’s a small... + read more
