Bernie PowellYour close friend is passing through an overwhelming trial. What do you write on the card?

You’re standing in line at the wake. What are you going to say?

In times like these, we can count on “the comfort of the scriptures,” Romans 15:4. God’s Word has divine power to touch the deepest chords of the human heart in ways that our mere human sentiments cannot begin to match. There are literally hundreds of verses that bring strong comfort. Here’s a small sampling:

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:18

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:28-29

God is our refuge and strength, ever-present help in trouble.
Psalm 46:1

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7

The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.
Deuteronomy 33:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
John 14:27

Weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.
Psalm 30:5

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
Isaiah 41:10

He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all – how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
Romans 8:32

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
2 Corinthians 1:3-4

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
2 Corinthians 12:9

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are- yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Hebrews 4:15-16

Rely on the unique power of God’s Word. It’s God’s provision to make us completely equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:17). At The Fellowship, we believe this. The Bible is not only the basis of public ministries, like preaching, teaching, and music. It’s also at the heart of very private, personal ministries, like bringing comfort & encouragement.
